Music school alum plays fun evening of jazz standards, originals

Brad Turner performs in concert with his quartet, plus will lead a jazz workshop in coming weeks

Multi-instrumental artist Brad Turner will be performing with his quartet at LCMS on April 25.

Former student and now 91原创 Community Music School's resident artist Brad Turner will be perform next week at his alma mater.

Turner, a former music school student, is now one of Canada鈥檚 most in-demand and highly esteemed jazz musicians. He has received multiple Junos and numerous other prestigious awards throughout his career.

And now, the multi-platform artist 鈥 who plays trumpet, piano and drums as well as composes 鈥 will be sharing an evening of cool jazz in the Rose Gellert concert hall on Friday, April 25, with the Brad Turner Quartet.

Turner has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John Scofield, Michael Moore, Rene茅 Rosnes, Jimmy Greene, Ingrid Jensen, Peggy Lee, Dave Douglas, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Kenny Werner, Mino Cinelu, Russell Malone, Terri Lyne Carrington, Charles McPherson, and Ernie Watts.

As a leader, he has released eleven albums, nine as a trumpeter with the Brad Turner Quartet, and two as a pianist with his trio. Four of those releases have been nominated for Juno Awards.

In 1997 and 1998 and again in 2017 Brad won Juno Awards for best contemporary jazz album, recognizing his work in the internationally acclaimed electric jazz group Metalwood, which he co-leads.

Winner of National Jazz Awards for jazz composer of the year (2000 and 2002), Turner was awarded musician of the year for 2005 and was a recipient of 2006 Victor Lynch-Staunton Prize for excellence in musical achievement.

In 2008 and again in 2009, he took home National Jazz Awards for trumpeter of the year and producer of the year and was the recipient of the 2014 Vancouver Mayor鈥檚 Art Award for music.

As a composer, Turner has written extensively for his own groups through the years and has also been commissioned by various ensembles and musical societies to compose works for them, including Vancouver鈥檚 Hard Rubber New Music Society, 91原创 Community Music School, Couloir Ensemble, and the Turning Point Ensemble.

In 2021 Turner joined LCMS as Artist-in-Residence and he has since lead the school鈥檚 jazz ensemble program, performed multiple concerts, and gives a variety of master classes and workshops throughout the year, many of which are open to the community. He is also a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

He will be joined for next weekend's concert by bassist Andre Lachance, drummer Bernie Arai, and pianist Sharon Minemoto.

They will play a fun evening of jazz standards and original tunes, explained school principal Carolyn Granholm.

In addition to this weekend's concert, there is another date Turner and jazz fans alike might want to mark on their calendars.

On Sunday, May 4, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Turner will conduct a jazz trumpet (brass) workshop at the school. This free workshop is open to students who are currently studying or are interested in studying jazz, as well as music enthusiasts of all ages.

Space is limited, and all interested students must contact the school directly to register.

Further upcoming professional concerts at LCMS include "Pocket Symphonies鈥 with Jasper Wood, Joseph Elworthy, and the Bergmann Piano Duo (May 3); and Paolo Bortolussi, flute and Dr. Corey Hamm, piano (May 25).
