Danielle Lawrie is one of five finalists for a Sport BC award.

Lawrie, the two-time NCAA softball player of the year while with the Washington Huskies, is up against some lofty competition for the award, which will go to the athlete who best represented B.C. nationally or internationally in either a professional or amateur sport.

She is a 2005 graduate of Brookswood Secondary.

Also nominated are Penticton鈥檚 Duncan Keith, a defenceman for the Chicago Blackhawks, who won the Stanley Cup in June, as well as helping Canada win gold in men鈥檚 ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics; Whistler鈥檚 Asheigh McIvor, the ski-cross gold medalist at the 2010 Games; North Vancouver鈥檚 Lauren Woolstencroft, a five-time 2010 Paralympic gold medalist in para-alpine skiing; and another North Vancouver athlete, Maelle Ricker, who won gold at the Olympics in snowboard cross.

鈥�2010 was an outstanding year for B.C.鈥檚 athletes, as evident by the calibre of candidates put forward for this award,鈥� said Tim Gayda, Sport BC president and CEO. 鈥淭hese five athletes are powerhouses, not only as competitors in their respective sports, but also in their representation of our province on the world stage.鈥�

The public will have a chance to help determine the winner as voting is open at SportBC.com/bestofbc until Feb. 20.

The winner will be revealed on Feb. 21.
