Police in Surrey are investigating a fatal collision that left one man dead.
Emergency crews responded to a call of an eight-vehicle collision near Fraser Highway and 64 Avenue at 11:55 a.m. Saturday (April 26).
When police arrived on the scene, they saw that a single vehicle had mounted the curb and hit seven unoccupied parked cars, Sgt. Tige Pollock, the media relations officer for Surrey Police Service, said in a news release.
Despite lifesaving measures by Surrey Fire Service firefighters and BCEHS paramedics, the 58-year-old man died, Pollock said.
"At this early stage, the cause of the collision remains unknown, but it is believed that it is due to a medical emergency suffered by the driver," Pollock said
The RCMP Surrey Police Operations Support Unit鈥檚 Criminal Collision Investigation Team (SPOSU CCIT) and the Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) are investigating the crash.
Police have closed 196 Street and one lane westbound on Fraser Highway between 64 Avenue. As of 3 p.m. Saturday, it is still closed, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
