Smoking bans mean little

Editor: In the last three months, I鈥檝e been to the 91原创 Memorial Hospital, Royal Columbian hospital and the Vancouver General Hospital. They all have two things in common 鈥 they have signs clearly posted at the entrance ways, 鈥淣o smoking on premises or grounds,鈥 and they apparently do not enforce their bans.

Each time I visited LMH, I had to first clear the gauntlet of smokers at the entrance way. Some were patients with their IV poles in tow, some were members of the staff, and some were no doubt visitors. Vancouver General and Royal Columbian hospitals are no different.

There is no question that the noose is tightening around smokers鈥 necks in this society, but passively permitting smoking at hospital entrance ways defies all logic and common sense, and consideration and courtesy for others.

I would hope that these hospitals would notch up the enforcement in regard to their smoking bans on their respective properties.
