91Ô´´ Gymnastics Foundation has a very good year

A successful competition season included first club athlete named to national team

It was a very, very good year for 91Ô´´ Gymnastics Foundation (LGF), one of substantial growth, that saw club athletes rack up multiple medal wins and top-10- finishes at provincial, national and international events.

LGF General Manager Jen Coimbra called it "a very successful competition season."

Three of those provincial events were hosted by the club at 91Ô´´ Events Centre – the Christy Fraser Memorial Invitational, Elite Canada, and Western Canadian championships.

At the Westerns, LGF won 22 women's medals, with Makenzie Grant and Josie Maryschak crowned CCP 10 and CCP 9 AA champions, while the club also captured16 men's medals including one Western AA champion, Kayden Sorge

The club capped off the competition season in June at the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Gatineau, QC, recording  multiple medals and top-10 finishes including a first in parallel bars for Ethan Lee, and a first in pommels for Aiden Gonzalez.

Gonzalez competed for Canada at the Pan Am Championships in Santa Marta, Columbia May 22-26, becoming the first LGF athlete in the history of the club to be named to the Canadian national team.

In Columbia, Gonzalez helped Canada place fourth as a team and qualified for the high bar final, where he finished in fourth, just out of medal contention.

His happiest memory was "finishing the team competition day because I was representing team Canada and did well," Gonzalez to the 91Ô´´ Advance Times.

"Next year, I'm excited for more opportunities to represent Canada on the Junior team and travel with them to new countries."

His coach, Krtis Krunick, described it as "an amazing experience."

"It was super motivating for Aiden to be selected by the National Team Head Coach for this event," Krunick told the 91Ô´´ Advance Times.

"Being able to put on that Team Canada uniform is an honour, and an opportunity he is looking forward to again."

Coimbra called it a "91Ô´´enal achievement."

"This is a huge milestone and accomplishment for the gym club and MAG [Men's Artistic Gymnastics] program," Coimbra commented.

Another LGF competitor, Jordanna Phillis, competed internationally at the Luxembourg Open.

Other accomplishments cited by the club this season: LGF Giving Tree partnered with Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society to provide four families with Christmas gifts; and LGF Community Outreach Program provided gymnastics programming to local youth who would other be unable to participate in extra-curricular sports, offering free summer camps in 2023 and 2024.

"Our recreational program is flourishing, with over 1,100 participants per session," Coimbra estimated.

Community outreach included Seniors Can Move classes, providing older people with free gymnastics classes that focus on improving flexibility, strength, and balance, while also teaching safe falling techniques.

"LGF is looking forward to another successful year," Coimbra said.
