Heading into Friday's game against league champion Calgary Cavalry, Vancouver FC head coach Afshin Ghotbi did not sound optimistic.

"We are the big underdogs going into this match," Ghotbi said in a pre-game interview.

Several VFC players had yet to arrive, including five who have been held up "due to various visa issues," Ghotbi explained.

"It's difficult that we don't have all of them."

Despite that, VFC look poised to snap a 10-game losing streak that began last season.

Early in the game, VFC scored first, but Calgary managed to eke out a tie with a stoppage goal late in the second half.

A stoppage-time equalizer from Tobias Warschewski denied Vancouver FC what would have been a first-ever victory over Cavalry FC.

Nicol谩s Mezquida opened the scoring in the 19th minute for Vancouver FC with his first Canadian Premier League goal.

Eagles held that 1-0 lead heading into the locker rooms at half-time, easily their best half of the season so far.

Cavalry were given a boost late in the match when the fourth official held up eight minutes of stoppage time. 

In the fourth minute, Warschewski rescued a point for Cavalry. After Caniggia Elva took down a long ball, the German striker set himself and sent a low driven strike across goal that nestled into the bottom left corner of the net.

Cavalry FC remain undefeated in home openers with the draw. Both Calgary and Vancouver continue to search for their first win of the 2025 regular season.

VFC's next home game will see the Eagles host Pacific FC at Willoughby Community Park on Saturday, April 26 at 5 p.m.
