On a cold and sunny Saturday morning, the lineup of vehicles for the annual Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection event in 91原创 Township stretched along the southbound lane of 208th Street near 42nd Avenue, as residents waited their turn to drop off hard-to-dispose items in the parking lot of the George Preston rec centre.
There were three collection stations, one for electronics, small appliances, batteries, light bulbs, smoke alarms, and thermostats, a second for motor oil, antifreeze, cleaning supplies, acids, pool chemicals, and propane tanks and a third for flammable liquids, pesticides, gasoline and diesel.

It was the third year at the event for Art Bandieks, who drove in from Aldergrove with some large metal barrels of 40-year-old gasoline 鈥渇rom the old farm,鈥 along with 鈥渁 lot鈥 of oil, and pesticides.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 great,鈥 Bandieks said of the annual event, which has been running more than 20 years.
As workers in cold-weather parkas and hoodies unloaded his pickup, Bandieks said he was pleased they were also collecting non-perishable food donations on behalf of the Aldergrove Food Bank.
He suggested the event could be collecting cash donations for the food bank, as well.
鈥淚 like the food bank idea, [but] they could do a little chip thing to accept donations, too.鈥
Roy Choo, who used a forklift to unload the barrels from Bandieks鈥 truck, explained the two-day event allowed residents to 鈥渂ring any of their [hazardous] waste in that they got at home to get rid of.鈥
鈥淲e collect that, we segregate it, and we dispose of it,鈥 Choo summarized.

Running Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the drive-through event was billed as a chance for residents to responsibly dispose of, or recycle, their household hazardous waste at one convenient location.
Over both days, event staff collected hazardous materials from 908 vehicles, estimated Chris Combe, Township of 91原创 Environmental Sustainability Coordinator and event organizer.
鈥淭he sun was shining this year for another successful Household Hazardous Waste Event at George Preston Recreation Centre,鈥 Combe said.
Items such as pesticides, fuel, adhesives, cleaners, electronics were accepted. More information can be found online at .
This year, the event was not a joint Township-91原创 City event.
Restricted to Township residents only, a driver鈥檚 license or utility bill was required as proof of local residency to make a drop-off.

In August, the Township notified the City of its decision. It was too late in the year for the City to organize their own event, according to David Pollock, 91原创 City director of engineering, parks, and recreation.
Instead, Pollock said the City was educating residents about how to handle materials that cannot go into the landfill, and planning for its own event in 2024.
