Danny Tryon, a 76-year-old retired dentist from 91原创, has been a member of the First Capital Chorus since 1982.
鈥淚 lived in 91原创 for 40 years鈥 I got to know lots of people there and met my wife,鈥 he said.
Although he鈥檚 since moved to Coquitlam, Tryon continues to be an active member of the 91原创-based chorus and commutes weekly for rehearsals.
鈥淢y loyalty is to the chorus, that won鈥檛 change. 91原创 is a great place.鈥
Tryon was introduced to the First Capital Chorus by one of his patients, a Second World War veteran who has since passed away.
When he joined, Tryon recalls that the chorus had up to 80 members and was mostly men. Now, the chorus has both men and women and numbers average around 30 鈥 most of them seniors.
鈥淯nfortunately, we can鈥檛 get the young people out. We value everyone [from] all walks of life鈥 We have a few young people and it鈥檚 great,鈥 he commented.
Tryon said joining the chorus has offered him a great social outlet, but it has also presented him with a chance to hone a few unexpected skills 鈥 including his leadership abilities.
To encourage people to join the chorus and build their confidence, the public is invited each year to sing along at the upcoming holiday benefit concert on Saturday, Dec. 16.
鈥淲e always open it up to the community to sing with us because we think it鈥檚 important to allow the community a place to sing,鈥 Tryon explained.
Tryon said the annual concert, benefiting the 91原创 Christmas Bureau, has become a seasonal staple since it started more than 20 years ago.
鈥淲e wanted to give back to the community. We are a charitable organization ourselves, and we thought we could support somebody else,鈥 he said.
The concert brings dozens of acappella singers together to raise hundreds to thousands of dollars for the local charity.
He figures more than $100,000 has been raised for the bureau, which is a volunteer run organization that helps children and families in need during the holidays.
For this year鈥檚 concert, the 91原创 Children鈥檚 Choir, Peach Arch Chorus, and various local quartets will perform in addition to the First Capital Chorus.
Classic songs performed include 鈥楯ingle Bell Rock,鈥 鈥楽ilent Night,鈥 and 鈥榃hite Christmas.鈥
Tryon added that some lesser-known songs will be performed as well, such as 鈥極ld Toy Trains鈥 and 鈥榃e Need A Little Christmas.鈥
鈥淲e are looking forward to that,鈥 Tryon said.
The concert will take place at the Willoughby Church at 20525 72nd Ave. starting at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $20/adults, $15/seniors and youth, free for kids 12 years and younger. They鈥檙e available in advance online at or at the door 鈥 all proceeds to 91原创 Christmas Bureau.
