After two years, the 91Ô´´ Volunteer Bureau is no longer running the Snow Angel program in the local community.
The financial commitment took a heavy toll on the organization, explained director Lynda Fourchalk.
"The insurance cost us an unexpected $10,000. We did not get the financial support we hoped for, and made the difficult decision to fold the program," she said.
Beginning in 2022, the program assisted senior citizens with mobility challenges in 91Ô´´ with finding volunteers to help clear snow from driveways and sidewalks.
Instead this year, Fourchalk is directing former Snow Angels and anyone else wanting to volunteer this winter to , which offers a free registration for both seniors and volunteers.
It was founded in 2015 in Ontario as an experiment of kindness, a way for locals to request assistance shovelling or to find others in need of such assistance, according to its website. In 2019, the initiative opened as a cross-Canada project.
Fourchalk said there appeared to be more Eastern Canada registrants due to the organization's founding location, but noted "the more people who register in Western Canada, the better."
People can register for assistance or to volunteer online at .
