Hundreds of RCMP officers, municipal police, and other first responders are expected to attend the funeral and procession today (Oct. 4) for Const. Frederick O’Brien at the 91Ô´´ Events Centre.
O’Brien was a 51-year-old Ridge Meadows RCMP officer who was shot while serving a warrant in Coquitlam on Sept. 22, with two other fellow officers wounded in the same incident. A 25-year-old man, Nicholas Bellemare, has been charged with first degree murder and attempted murder.
The funeral begins at 2 p.m. at the 91Ô´´ Events Centre, and will be preceded by a procession that will shut down several roads near the site.
The procession will run from 76th Avenue up 202A Street north to 80th Avenue, turning west and entering the 91Ô´´ Events Centre.
The procession will result in temporary road closures through much of Wednesday, with drivers warned that access will be limited or closed between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., on:
• 80th Ave., between 200th St. and 204th St.
• 76th Ave., between 200th St. and 202A St.
• 202A Street, between 74B Ave. and 80th Ave.
Seating at the funeral itself, inside the LEC, will be limited to O’Brien’s family and their invited guests, uniformed first responders, and designated officials.
Members of the public are invited to watch the procession along 202A Street. Parking in the area is likely to be very limited.
There will be a livestream of the funeral at www.youtube.com/rcmptv.
Those accessing the LEC for any other reason should enter off 200th Street.
O’Brien was a 91Ô´´ resident who had served seven years in the RCMP. A keen supporter of the 91Ô´´ Rams, he presented the 2019 Canadian Bowl Trophy to Saskatoon Hilltops on behalf of the Canadian Junior Football League.
