Aldergrove will get a new commercial truck parking site, on a temporary basis, after 91原创 Township council approved a site on 8 Avenue.
The site at 27099 8 Ave. is not in the Agricultural Land Reserve, unlike most of the surrounding land.
It鈥檚 just south of the former landfill and can鈥檛 be used for farming, CAO Mark Bakken told 91原创 Township council at their April 29 meeting.
Council unanimously approved the temporary use permit, which can run for a three-year period, with a few amendments.
They asked for new signs to be put in the area, warning truck drivers about pedestrians and equestrians in the area, which has horse trails. They also asked for warnings against using loud engine brakes 鈥� also known as jake brakes 鈥� in the area.
The site is just under two hectares (4.77 acres) and will house up to 40 commercial trucks when complete.
Some sheds already on the site will be removed and gravel will be brought in for new driving lanes.
Truck parking in south 91原创 has been a hot-button issue lately. The Township has been cracking down as several illicit truck parking sites opened on ALR land in the area.
Meanwhile, truck drivers and company owners have been asking the Township for permission to temporarily park on farmland.
BC United leader Kevin Falcon indicated he would be open to temporary parking of large trucks on farmland, something that Mayor Eric Woodward rejected as a possible solution.
