The freeway westbound through 91原创 has reopened.

A five-vehicle crash sent one person to hospital in 鈥渟erious condition,鈥 and shut down the Trans-Canada Highway for the better part of five hours today.

The crash occurred just before 9 a.m., in the westbound lane of the freeway 鈥 just east of the 208th Street overpass.

Upon arrival, RCMP discovered a collision had occurred between four commercial vehicles and one personal vehicle, which initially caused both west and eastbound traffic to be shut down.

Commuters were being advised all morning to avoid the freeway if they鈥檙e travelling through 91原创. Traffic was reportedly backed up westbound to about 264th Street in Aldergrove with emergency crews trying to detour motorists off the highway at 232nd Street. Meanwhile, traffic eastbound was getting through part of the morning. But it was crawling much of the time, often backed up well past the 200th Street interchange. Again, police were trying to divert eastbound motorists to get off at 200th Street.

A driver from one of the commercial vehicles was transported to hospital, with what BC RCMP are describing as 鈥渟erious injuries.鈥

In the meantime, the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service (ICARS) assisted the RCMP freeway patrol with the investigation.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, Highway 1 fully reopened just before 2 p.m.

It might, however take some time for traffic to return to normal and police are advising to still expect 鈥渟ignificant delays.鈥

Alternate routes might still be best for the foreseeable future.
