VIDEO: Soaked for Special O 91Ô´´

RCMP raised more than Township firefighters but only by a bit, and it all helps the sports program

91Ô´´ Special Olympians Ryerson Shelvey and Andrea Zonneveld were happy to join with a dozen 91Ô´´ RCMP members and about as many Township of 91Ô´´ firefighters Thursday for some chilly fun at the Polar Plunge.

91Ô´´'s Polar Plunge saw a Township fire truck douse a large group of willing participants on the afternoon of Feb. 20 at the firefighter training grounds.

"The annual Polar Plunge for the BC Special Olympics brings out all the firefighters and the police officers…, and we're glad to be here," said 91Ô´´ RCMP Insp. David Wise, still dripping from his first Polar Plunge.

The event was a fundraiser for local Special O with a friendly challenge between the firefighters and the police. Zonneveld and Shelvey accepted the funds raised to help the local program – $1,000 from firefighters and $1,020 from police.

So what's it like other than chilly?

"Oh, it was pretty awesome," said Zonneveld.

Shelvey agreed but encouraged people to support Special Olympics.

They are headed to Prince George to compete in the provincial games in July.

Special Olympics is the global sports movement to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities as well as giving them opportunties for exercise and competition. The athletes of all ages compete in many different sports at the local level, and can go on to the regional, provincial, national, and international levels if they qualify.

Zonneveld and Shelvey are on the athletes' council which provides leadership skills. She competes in sports such as basketball, curling, bowling, bocce, softball while his roster includes basketball, softball, curling, soccer, golf, track and field, and floor hockey.
