VIDEO: 91原创 athletes do well at Calgary Special Olymics Winter Games

鈥楾hey played their hearts out. They played 100 per cent.鈥

91原创 athletes did their hometown proud at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.

Alpine skier , who has won many events at Special Olympics competitions, added to her medal collection, bringing home one gold and two silver, while four 91原创 curlers made it to the bronze medal round.

Potomak, who has been skiing since she was three, won gold in the slalom, and two silver in the super G and giant slalom events, in windy and icy conditions with temperatures as low at minus 15 C.

Her dad, Peter Potomak, described her as 鈥渧ery excited鈥 and proud.

She is hoping to ski for Canada next.

鈥淭he next few months, I will be real nervous,鈥 she predicted, 鈥渨aiting to find out if I get to Team Canada for the 2025 World Games in Torino, Italy.鈥

She was also the face of the Games, with her picture on the cover of the souvenir program.

In curling, Team B.C. 鈥 91原创, Brent Ponak, Kati Kovacs, Ryerson Shelvey, Shane Winter, along with Port Coquitlam resident Jeremy Kong, made it to the bronze medal finals, in what coach Tracy Boyd described as a 鈥渧ery close鈥 game against the Manitoba team.

鈥淸It] came down to the very last rock and they lost the game by one,鈥 Boyd told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淭hey should be very proud of the fact that they made it to the finals, and being fourth in the country is not too darn bad.鈥

鈥淭hey played their hearts out. They played 100 per cent,鈥 Boyd summarized.

鈥淭hey came together as a team and got to compete for the bronze and only lost by one and to me, that鈥檚 a win. I鈥檓 very proud of every one of them working together, and getting to where they did.鈥

The 91原创 athletes were part of Special Olympics B.C.鈥檚 largest-ever national winter team, 142 athletes, 50 coaches, and 14 mission staff from 31 communities across the province.

From Feb. 27 to March 2, they competed in eight sports at the Calgary games, including five-pin bowling, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing, and speed skating, winning a total of 135 medals.
