VIDEO: Kid-friendly creativity in Douglas Park

Second year for outdoor event organized by 91Ô´´ Arts Council

It was a cuddly-looking fuzzy blue monster, a hand puppet that, much to its chagrin, delighted both the kids and the adults seated on the grass of Douglas Park in 91Ô´´ City.

"I can't be cute," it grumbled.

"I'm a monster. What will happen to me if I'm not scary?"

One of the parents in the audience offered a hug, and puppeteer Kieu Trieu allowed it.

It was story time with Trieu, from the Fraser Valley Regional Library, one of several attractions at the second annual 91Ô´´ Arts Council Outdoor Arts Fair designed to inspire creativity in a fun way.

Attractions included a table showing kids how to make decorative spinners with coloured construction paper and cardboard, while at another table, kid's faces were the canvas, as they lined up to have painted-on designs applied.

Instructor Kuetina Qaqtis  demonstrated how to use backpacks as a canvas, teaching kids well 10 to 15 fabric painting techniques.

"Anything that they want to do pretty much, and using different materials," Qaqtis said.

"We've got tons of materials here, fabric paints, three-dimensional paints, sponges, and paint brushes."

Day one, Saturday, Aug. 3 was devoted to kid-friendly events designed to encourage creativity, while the second day showcased 17 local and regional artists as well as works by the 91Ô´´ Camera Club.

Next on the schedule for LAC, another free Art in the Park plein-air event on Aug. 24 in Portage Park (located at 204 St. and 51 Ave.) from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Artists of all levels are welcome to attend and participate. Participants are asked to register in advance, free of charge.
