It was the first Seniors Day pie giveaway for 91原创 City resident Melanie Dyke, who ended up first in line in her car at Sunridge Gardens residence in Murrayville on Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, shortly before the event began.
"I'm so excited," Dyke enthused.
"I saw the ad in the 91原创 Advance Times newspaper, so I cut it out and put it on my calendar. I came awfully early, but I wanted to make sure I got a good pie."
For National Seniors Day, two 91原创 residences, the Sunridge Gardens and Magnolia Gardens, were giving away free pies on Tuesday. It started during the pandemic, an organizer explained.

At Sunridge, the first 50 seniors to drive through received a bourbon espresso pumpkin pie preopared by the executive chef at the residence, together with the recipe.
At another 91原创 residence, Magnolia Gardens in the afternoon, 75 seniors received an apple crumble pie.
Bria Communities, which operates both residences, started the drive-through event during the pandemic, marketing manager Janic Miller explained.
"This is the fifth year of us doing our drive-through pie giveaway," Miller said as she directed traffic.
"This was something we developed during the pandemic to celebrate seniors in a time when everybody was isolated, but now we've kept on doing it because free pie is everybody's favourite. We love the opportunity to get to know some of our seniors who are in 91原创, and and say hi, and give away delicious pie made by our chefs."
Bria also held pie giveaways at two of their residences in Tsawwassen, the Waterford, which was distributing honey-spiced pear pies, and the Wexford, which was handing out blueberry lavender honey pies.
National Seniors Day in Canada on Oct. 1 coincides with the United Nations鈥� International Day of Older Persons. The day celebrates and appreciates seniors鈥� contributions to homes and communities.
