VIDEO: Longer hours considered at 91Ô´´ seniors centre

Getting busier, executive director says

Rising popularity of Saturday openings at the 91Ô´´ Senior Resources Society centre could lead to longer hours, said Kate Ludlam, executive director of the 91Ô´´ City facility at 20605 - 51B Ave.

"We're seeing our numbers go up in every way," Ludlam estimated. "Certainly our membership numbers are very high and we're trending upwards."

Currently, the hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. but Ludlam said they are considering staying open until 4 .p.m. to accommodate the influx of seniors.

"If you think about the demographic, the oldest baby boomer is about 79 this year," Ludlam said. "They want opportunities to enjoy recreation, some educational opportunities, as well as the socialization."

Saturday openings are a relatively recent things, but an "awful flood" in January was a setback, Ludlam explained.

"We had only been open for one Saturday and then the flood happened."

Ludlam was being interviewed at the centre on Saturday, Sept. 21.

"We were sidetracked by the flood but now we're open on Saturdays and as you can see behind me we've got lots of seniors in the community who want to come out and spend some time with us," Ludlam smiled.

"We have a great lunch menu, our table tennis happens Saturday mornings and right now we have a yoga class going on."
