More than 3,500 Christmas cards were designed and written by 91原创 students for local seniors this holiday season.

Lynda Fourchalk, the 91原创 Volunteer Bureau card program coordinator, said 80 teachers in 43 schools took part, and some teachers ordered for more than one class.

RC Garnet Elementary itself had 16 different classrooms making cards, she noted.

"The exceptional artwork and thoughtful messages created by students from the 91原创 School District and other groups in the area for our seniors continues to inspire us," Fourchalk commended.

New youth groups also participated this year including Job's Daughters, Nurturing Hearts Montessori, and Pebbles and Piglet Early Learning where kids as young as one-year-old will be making cards.

"We appreciate the support from Gulf & Fraser Credit Union, and Rotary Club of Aldergrove to help make this possible," Fourchalk said.

Cards were delivered to 25 facilities including the Aldergrove legion branch, 91原创 Meals on Wheels, 91原创 Senior Resource Society, Ron Cares Society, and the 91原创 Memorial Hospital. Most senior residences also received cards.

This Christmas marked the fifth year of the program by the Aldergrove-based bureau.

She added that, since the Cards For Seniors program's inception, more than 32,000 cards have been made and delivered to local seniors at no cost.

"We are so grateful for the community's support," she said.

The program started during the pandemic to help combat the isolation some seniors were facing.

Fourchalk said it has continued 鈥渂ecause it鈥檚 just been so well received by teachers, students, and the [senior] facilities.鈥

Cards have also been sent out on Easter, Valentine鈥檚 Day, and Remembrance Day.

"The Cards for Seniors Program is loved by all sides... It's a feel-good project for us all, and 91原创 Volunteer Bureau is proud to sponsor the project," Fourchalk said.

, also known as 鈥91原创 Volunteers鈥, is now a registered charity, formed to promote the value of volunteering and to connect volunteers in the community with organizations who need them.

Anyone who would like to register a senior or volunteer with the program can email cardsforseniors@langleyvolunteers.ca or visit .
