After 45 years in the community, the Aldergrove Veterans & Seniors Society (AVSS) remains steadfast in its original location still serving the community.
The society was founded in 1980 by a group of veterans who wanted a place to spend time with family and friends, enjoy a meal, and play games, said Rea Coates, the society's president.
In the mid-1980s, the society expanded from just veterans to include all seniors. At that time, it was renamed the AVSS and officially became a non-profit society for veterans and seniors 55 years or older, setting up shop at 27247 Fraser Hwy. That's where they still are today.
"[We] have grown a membership to 105," Coates noted.
Two members, Jeanne Gurney and Marilyn Peter – who have been members for more than 10 years – said they joined the society because it gets them out of the house.
"They both enjoy the camaraderie they have found, and volunteering," Coates shared.
Another member, Maureen Purser, said she enjoys socializing and laughing everyday she comes in.
Other than a paid cook and janitor, the society is operated completely by volunteers.
The centre is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
"We offer our members and others from the community a place to meet other seniors, and enjoy a nutritious home cooked meal," Coates said.
She estimates that 80 meals are provided each week, which can be eaten in or taken home.
"We encourage members to stay after the meal and play cards or Mexican train dominoes," she added.
Coates also noted that they always have a garage sale going with items donated by members or by the community. All proceeds support the kitchen.
The society hosts a twice-annual bake sale, and holds community events for Aldergrove Days, Halloween, and Christmas.
"We enjoy people from the community who just stop in to see what we are and perhaps just have a cup of coffee," she said.
Coates added that all are welcome, member or not, to visit the centre. And similarly, volunteer are welcome and always in demand.
"We always need kitchen cleanup help," she said.
