Diana Mohtar just started cooking for the Aldergrove Veterans and Seniors Society (AVSS) a few weeks ago because she loves cooking fresh.
When the cook before her left, a mutual friend suggested Mohtar fill the role.
"I love cooking. I like it when people like my food," she chuckled.
Within her first month at the AVSS, she's cooked spanakopita, meatloaf, stirfry, turkey, beef stew, chili, lasagna, plus veggies and salads to go with the meals as part of the society's weekly (four-days a week) meal program.
All meals are served with dessert and coffee, as well.
"It's different all the time. We try to integrate a lot of fresh produce and make sure they get their vegetables and protein," Mohtar said.
She noted that it's very important to eat healthy as we age, and to be mindful of what our body can digest.
"As you get older, your body [may not] accept certain foods. Some people can't eat salads for digestive reasons. So it's basically what you would cook a normal meal for your everyday family... and the people who have sensitivities we don't give it to them. As long as we know what's going on, we know how to plate their particular dish," she said of the weekly meals.
Rea Coates, president of the society since June, added that taking part in the program can be more enjoyable than eating or cooking on your own.
"We try to provide a healthy, nutritious, balanced meal with protein, starch, and vegetables or salad everyday. Our members can enjoy eating while visiting with others or take meals home for later," Coates said.
The society is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
She also noted that they always have a garage sale going with items donated by members or by the community, of which proceeds support the kitchen.
The AVSS is a non-profit society for veterans and seniors of Aldergrove and surrounding neighbourhoods, which is funded through membership fees, donations, grants, and the work of volunteers. Games of bingo, cards, or dominoes are often held as well.
The society is located at 27247 Fraser Hwy.
The weekly meal schedule is posted on the . People are asked to order at least 24 hours in advance between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. by calling 604-856-3271.
