91Ô´´ kids read to therapy dog Kaslo

Animal events are just some of what's offered at local public libraries.

Kaslo the therapy dog is many things – well trained, hypoallergenic, and very patient.

The dog is the perfect companion for young kids who visited the Murrayville Library on Wednesday, March 26 for a special session when they could read to Kaslo.

With his owner, Deanne Berlinguette, a former primary school teacher, Kaslo listened intently to the young readers who were allowed to give the dog a treat after their turns. Reading to therapy dogs has developed because it may be easier for kids to read aloud to a dog.

The session, booked with kids looking forward to reading to Kaslo, is one of the many unique offerings of the Fraser Valley Regional Library which has broadened the offerings well beyond books and magazines. This session was held at the Murrayville Library branch which has in the past welcomed in the Otter 4-H Club with its chickens, rabbits, ducks, and other fowl. It and other branches have hosted sessions with Greyhaven Parrot Sanctuary and Orphaned Wildlife Rescue (OWL).

There's also dance events to celebrate various cultures, and holidays, themed scavenger hunts, and partnerships with other groups to help the public with topics ranging from tax prep to dental hygiene for infants. Most programs are free and open to the public. Library cards are free for local residents.
