As of mid-August, there were still slots available for the Hand Over A Jeep contest, which will see one local resident win the lease on a brand new Jeep Cherokee, and insurance costs, for a year.

Part of the slate of events for this year鈥檚 91原创 Good Times Cruise-In, the contest will start on Thursday, Sept. 7, but is likely to wrap up with the last few contestants on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the big car show itself.

The contest format is an old classic 鈥 everyone puts their hand on the Jeep, and the last one to remove their hand gets to drive away with it.

鈥淚t is definitely a test of endurance and the desire to win the prize,鈥 said Marty Brown, a director with 91原创 Good Times Cruise-In.

The contest begins at 8 a.m. two days before the Cruise-In weekend.

The selected contestants will turn up at the 91原创 Chrysler dealership on the 91原创 Bypass to place their hands on the vehicle, and the contest will continue, with brief breaks to stretch and use the washroom, around the clock.

鈥淚t goes until there is one person remaining,鈥 said Brown.

That person gets the use of the Jeep Cherokee Altitude 4x4 for a year.

If multiple people manage to make it all the way through to Saturday, the Jeep will be taken to the Cruise-In in Aldergrove, and the contest will resume.

Should more than one person make it to 11 a.m. that day, a draw will be held to determine which of the contestants gets the Jeep, said Brown.

Some of the entries already received are showing a lot of enthusiasm for the prize, and people are also giving details about why they want the Jeep, or their relationship with previous Jeeps.

鈥淚 own and drive a 1993 Jeep YJ that has been made to be a screen accurate replica Jurassic Park Jeep,鈥 wrote one applicant.

鈥淚 wish to compete against my brothers for the chance to win the one-year lease,鈥 wrote another, who vowed that 鈥渋f the contest lasts longer than three days, then I鈥檓 willing to quit my job.鈥

Brown said the contestants approved so far are a colourful group, and he鈥檚 expecting it will be a fun contest.

As of early this week, there were still a number of spaces left out of the up to 40 people who will be selected.

Members of the public who wish to compete are asked to send a brief (1,000 words or less) explanation of why they would like to have the car and should win, to cruiseintowin@gmail.com.

The package includes a one-year lease on the Jeep Cherokee, as well as insurance. The entire package is valued at more than $15,000, said Brown.

Those entering have to be B.C. residents, be 19 or older, and hold a valid Class 5 driver鈥檚 licence. They also need to be able to physically stand and participate for the duration of the contest.
