A Chemical Reaction to be screened Wednesday

The Canadian Cancer Society, 91原创 Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), Kwantlen Polytechnic University鈥檚 School of Horticulture and the Green Ideas Network, are inviting residents to learn more about how cosmetic pesticides affect health and the environment at a community dialogue and screening of the film A Chemical Reaction.

It will be on Wednesday, May 18 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Kwantlen University 91原创 campus.

A 鈥楪reen Wednesday鈥 event, the evening will feature the screening of the film A Chemical Reaction, which tells the story of a powerful community initiative that eventually resulted in Canada鈥檚 first bylaw to ban the use of all chemical pesticides and herbicides, in Hudson, Quebec.

The bylaw withstood a challenge by the chemical industry in the Supreme Court of Canada and so far the provinces of Quebec and Ontario have implemented provincial bans on the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides 鈥 168 Canadian municipalities have adopted similar bylaws.

A Chemical Reaction 鈥渋s 75 minutes of pure inspiration that a community can come together and overcome great odds to effect change,鈥 said Nichole Marples, LEPS executive director.

Canadian Cancer Society health promotion co-ordinator, Mandip Kharod said that Green Wednesdays raise awareness about the potentially harmful effects of pesticides.

鈥淲e hope that this public screening will help to further educate our communities on the health risks associated with unnecessary cosmetic pesticide use,鈥 Kharod said.

Admission is by donation for this family-friendly event, although there is a small parking fee. The organizers encourage everyone to attend and learn more about how individuals and communities can work together to reduce pesticide use. Refreshments will be provided, but participants are asked to bring their own mugs. Green Wednesdays are sponsored by A Bread Affair and LadyBug Organics.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. People can register at 604-599-3311, or e-mail Gary.Jones@Kwantlen.ca or call 604-532-3511, or nmarples@tol.ca.
