Midfielder James Cameron has been transferred from Vancouver FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, for an undisclosed fee and future considerations.
The deal was announced Feb. 28.
Cameron, 20, is the second outgoing transfer of the off-season for Vancouver, after former VFC teammate Grady McDonnell was moved to Club Brugge of the Belgian Pro League last month for a club-record fee.
The native of North Vancouver was identified by his hometown club when he attended an open trial held by VFC ahead of its inaugural season in 2023. He represented the organization on back-to-back development contracts before signing his first professional contract with the Eagles in July.
Vancouver FC head coach Afshin Ghotbi praised Cameron鈥檚 dedication and growth, stating, 鈥淚t has been an incredible journey for James Cameron at Vancouver FC. He started his humble beginnings at our combine back in December 2022, and through his relentless effort, fighting spirit, and mental toughness, he has become one of the best teenagers in the CPL and the U20 Canadian national team. I truly believe that James will continue his development in MLS and reach even greater heights in the near future.鈥
Born on January 24, 2005, in North Vancouver, James began his soccer journey with local clubs, including North Vancouver FC, Mountain United FC, and Blaise Soccer Academy. His dedication and talent were evident early on, leading him to represent British Columbia at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, where he contributed to a commendable fifth-place finish.
In January 2023, he attended Vancouver FC鈥檚 open trials, earning an invitation to the club鈥檚 preseason in February. By May, he signed his first development contract, officially beginning his journey as a professional footballer. His impressive performance during the February 2023 trials earned him a developmental contract with Vancouver FC in May 2023. He also gained experience with their League1 British Columbia affiliate, Unity FC.

Cameron earned 37 pro appearances in all competitions for Vancouver over two seasons, scoring one goal. He is the club鈥檚 all-time leader in appearances by an Under-21 player, and was nominated for the League鈥檚 Best Canadian Under-21 Player Award following the 2023 CPL regular season.
His emergence on the professional stage with Vancouver also drew interest from Canada鈥檚 Under-20 men鈥檚 national team. Cameron was first called up to the squad in February 2024 for the Concacaf Under-20 Championship qualifiers, and then represented his country in the subsequent tournament last July.
