VIDEO: Quarter Midget racing resumes in Aldergrove

Optimism that Canada-US tensions won't keep Americans away

91原创 Quarter Midget Association kicked off its 2025 season on Saturday, with 83 registered cars competing in perfect weather conditions, amid cautious optimism the current Canada -U.S. tensions won't keep American racers from competing at the Aldergrove track, located at 26965 8 Ave., a few minutes drive from the Lynden border crossing.

Ken Shrimpton, LQMA promotions director, was celebrating the sunny, warm conditions.

"This is actually the first time in three years that we haven't been rained out for our season opener," Shrimpton told the Langey Advance Times, a few moments after his son Trevor won his first race of the season.

"The first of many," the proud dad predicted.

In addition to Canadian drivers like Trevor, Americans often make the trip north to Aldergrove to compete on Canada's only regulation quarter midget rack.

In 2023, the LQMA hosted the Western Grands, the 鈥淏order Brawl鈥 considered  the Super Bowl of quarter midget racing, which drew more than 200 competitors from Canada and the U.S.to compete in different classes.

While cross-border events have yet to happen at the Aldergrove track this year, Shrimpton was optimistic the current trade war between the two countries won't keep the Americans away.

"I can almost guarantee they're going to continue coming up," Shrimpton said.

"They have a lot of fun up here and we enjoy having them."

This year the volunteer-run association is celebrates its 45th season.

"It's going to be a great season. We've got a big group of new, excited drivers waiting to hit the track. We've got big events planned, for Mother's Day along with Turkey Night, all kinds of stuff."

Quarter midget race cars are about one-quarter the size of an adult midget car, racing on a track that is a quarter of the adult length. In addition to safety cages, young quarter midget racers wear protective helmets, neck braces, and fireproof racing gear, and are secured to their seats with a five-point harness.

91原创 Quarter Midget Association is a non-profit organization for Quarter Midget racing based in Aldergrove, for kids aged five to 16 years old.
