91Ô´´ Skating Club (LSC) coach Rob Woodley described it as "a very successful weekend."
LSC sent 35 skaters to compete in 37 events at the November Jingle Blades annual event hosted by the 91Ô´´ club at the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex.
They returned with 21 awards – seven gold, five silver and nine bronze, in medals and assessments handed out in beginner-level categories where skaters don't compete directly.
Many skaters were competing for the first time, Woodley said, many in new categories, and many achieved personal best scores.
More than 1,000 skaters of all levels from around the B.C. and the Yukon participated in the four-day event, from Nov. 21-24.
Woodley praised the "small army of volunteers" who helped with running and organizing the event in conjunction with Skate Canada (B.C. Coast Region).
"Many parents of skaters within our club showed up whether their child was competing or not, to help with Ice captain and dressing room duties, selling roses, preparing food for officials and coaches, and a myriad of other small jobs to make the event such a success." Woodley commented.
LSC. club president Michelle Towstyk, who co-chaired the organizing committee along with Deanna Edwards said the club board was "incredibly proud of all the skaters who competed in the Jingle Blades competition this year."
"Their hard work, team camaraderie and love for the sport was showcased on the ice over the weekend," Towstyk commented. "We are equally proud of our amazing LSC members who volunteered countless hours over the four days of the event. Their hard work and commitment were instrumental in making this competition a success."
Karen Deslauriers, LSC director of skating and club coach was "so proud of all of our skaters, for their hard work and dedication."
"The demonstrated skill set on the ice was matched by the genuine enthusiasm and support that our skaters showed for each other," Deslauriers added. "I am grateful to all of our coaches and skaters for how well they represented 91Ô´´ Skating Club at the 2024 Jingle Blades competition, and the ongoing support of our parents and board members."
Shortly before Jingle Blades, LSC. sent three skaters to the championships in Parksville: Lucy Chen, Kendyl Edwards and Amber Pepper all competed for the first time at a provincial competition.
Lucy earned a bronze medal in pre-Juvenile while Kendyl and Amber both finished 4th in their respective pre-juvenile groups.
