It was a great weekend at the WinterSkate Regionals for the , which sent 32 skaters to compete in 35 events at Coquitlam鈥檚 Poirer Sport and Leisure Complex.
Going up against close to 1,000 skaters registered in the competition from throughout the Greater Vancouver region. The 91原创 competitors came away from the early February event with five gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze medal.
91原创 Skating Club senior coach Rob Woodley called it 鈥渁 very successful weekend with 91原创 skaters taking home more medals than any other competition in recent memory.鈥�
鈥淭he 91原创 skaters came in to this competition well prepared, confident, and with a lot of excitement,鈥漌oodley added.
Many exceeded expectations, he noted, with many personal best results and scores achieved along the way.
鈥淢any skaters landed new jumps, tried different categories, even skated through injury for a couple of our skaters,鈥� Woodley remarked. 鈥淭hey learned valuable lessons and made new friends and are excited to keep training and improve for the next set of competitions and tests.鈥�
Three 91原创 Star 5 under-13 girls won gold: Amber Pepper, Lucy Chen, and Kendyl Edwards.
91原创 Star 7 skater Hannah Park won her first gold medal and Alicia Wang took home Gold in Star 4.
The 91原创 skaters ranged in age from six years old to 16.
鈥淔or six of our skaters, it was their very first event,鈥� Woodley said.
鈥淚 would like to congratulate all our skaters for showing how their dedication and team approach supporting one another has resulted in such a successful weekend of competition. There were highs and lows but the weekend was an exciting time to show off how much they鈥檝e improved over the season. We couldn鈥檛 be happier for every one of our club skaters.鈥�
There鈥檚 now about a month left in the winter season for the 91原创 skaters, who will be working towards achieving new skills, testing in freeskate, skills and dance, and some will attend the BC/YT Super Series Final in Kelowna, from March 7 to 10.
鈥淲e try and make skating look easy but the amount of practice and behind the scenes training and discipline is what鈥檚 getting this talented and hard working group of skaters their results,鈥� Woodley said. 鈥淭hey truly make skating look easier than it actually is!鈥�
