One night after pumping home five goals in a season-opening victory, the Trinity Western Spartans were snake bitten in their quest for a 2-0 start.
The Spartans men鈥檚 soccer team won 5-1 in Victoria Friday night against the UVic Vikes before falling 1-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday in Vancouver.
Leighton Johnson 鈥� who had four goals combined in his first three seasons with TWU 鈥� scored three times and set up one other in the victory.
Jacob Low opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest and Johnson struck for his first six minutes later.
The Vikes鈥� Tarnvir Bhandal got the home side on the board in the 28th minute but Johnson set up Cody Fransen in the 42nd minute to restore the two-goal advantage before half.
Johnson added two more goals in the second half, scoring from the penalty spot in the 58th minute and then burying his third of the game from 20 yards out eight minutes later.
The five goals represented TWU鈥檚 biggest regular season output since 2009.
The offence was blanked the next day, however, as the Spartans managed just one shot on goal in a 1-0 loss to the T-Birds.
The game鈥檚 only goal came in the 55th minute when Kyle Sohi capitalized on a penalty kick.
Rookie Sebastian Colyn was in goal for TWU in both games, making two saves vs. UBC and six the game before against the Vikes.
The Spartans are back in action this weekend (Sept. 1 and 2) with a pair of games against the UNBC Timberwolves, with both games at TWU鈥檚 Chase Office Field. Kick-off is 7:15 p.m. both nights.
The games are the start of a six-game homestand for TWU.
