Max Sasson鈥檚 return to the lineup brought back some offensive spark and depth for the Abbotsford Canucks on Wednesday (Oct. 20), as the club took down the Ontario Reign 5-2.
The rookie forward had missed all seven games this month after suffering a concussion and after a scoreless first period he put the Canucks on the board at 6:45 of the second.
Ontario got one back about four minutes later when Martin Chromiak scored on the power play, but Sasson replied just over two minutes later with a power play goal of his own at 12:47. The Reign again managed to tie the game up at 16:34 when Samuel Fagemo scored just after another power play expired at 16:34.
Sasson again put the Canucks ahead at 13:58 of the third by setting up defenceman Jett Woo perfectly and that would prove to be the game winner.
Vasily Podkolzin added an empty net goal at 18:40 and Arshdeep Bains scored on the power play at 19:37 to put the Canucks up 5-2.
The penalty-filled game saw the Canucks go two for seven with the man advantage and the Reign go one for five. Abbotsford outshot Ontario 43-24 and Podkolzin led all players with 10 shots on goal, while Sheldon Dries had six and Linus Karlsson had five.
Sasson had a team-high three points and both Karlsson and Bains had two point nights. Nikita Tolopilo started in goal for the Canucks for the second straight game and made 22 saves. He now has a record of 7-4 on the season and has won five of his last six starts.
Reported attendance for Wednesday inside the Abbotsford Centre was 4,498.
The Canucks record bumps up to 15-8-2-0 on the season and they remain in fourth place in the Pacific Division. The two teams square off again tomorrow (Thursday) with a 7 p.m. face-off set.
