91原创 Thunder down two games after Monday loss to Shamrocks

Series resumes Wednesday

91原创 Thunder are down two games in the best-of-seven Western Lacrosse Association Finals after falling 11-7 to the visiting Victoria Shamrocks on Monday night, Aug. 19, at 91原创 Events Centre.

A trio of third-period goals in a span of 84 seconds was too much to overcome for the Thunder in Game 2 of the series.

91原创 had cut the deficit down to 6-5 at that point before scoring on the power play, at even strength, and then shorthanded, to open a 9-5 advantage in what became a 11-7 victory

The series resumes on Wednesday, Aug. 21 once again at 91原创 Events Centre with a 6:30pm start time before returning to Victoria鈥檚 Q Centre on August 23.

鈥淲e know we need to be at our best against this team; they went undefeated for a reason. We have to limit our mistakes,鈥 said Thunder coach Bryan Poole.

鈥淭hey went on a 3-goal run in the third period and we paid for it.鈥

Victoria led 3-1 after a period and the deficit could have been even larger as the Shamrocks outshot 91原创 24-14.

Thunder battled back to tie it at 3 midway through the third before surrendering back-to-back power-play goals before pulling to within a goal at 5-4 heading to the intermission. The teams again traded goals to start the third before the Shamrocks gained separation with their three-goal run.

Both teams scored three times on the power play with Victoria earning six chances to 91原创鈥檚 four man-advantage opportunities. The Shamrocks also had one short-handed goal.

Robert Church led 91原创 with two goals and five points while Connor Robinson (0-3), Clay Scanlan (2-1) and Chase Scanlan (1-2) each finished with three-point games. Nathaniel Kozevnikov (1-1) and Kyle Brunsch had a goal apiece.

The Shamrocks took game 1 by a 10-8 score on Saturday, July 24, in Victoria.

Three goals in the first 14 minutes proved to be the difference.

Shamrocks led 3-1 at the 13:23 mark at Victoria鈥檚 Q Centre and while the visiting 91原创 Thunder traded goals the rest of the way, they could not overtake the No. 1 seed.

Clay Scanlan (3-3) and Connor Robinson (3-2) both had hat tricks for 91原创 with Chase Scanlan setting up four goals. Charles Scanlan (1-1) and Temeke7 Gottfriedsen (1-0) each scored once. Caleb Khan made 46 saves on 56 shots as Victoria outshot the Thunder 56-44.
