After the first quarter finished tied at 11, the Brookswood Bobcats put the clamps on defensively the rest of the way and the end result was the team's 14th straight 91原创 district Grade 8 girls basketball championships.

The Bobcats defeated the 91原创 Christian Lightning 32-20 on Thursday afternoon at the 91原创 Events Centre.

Brookswood allowed just nine points over the game's final 24 minutes.

"We started helping each other out on defence," said coach Ivan Adrian.

The Lightning had a significant height advantage, but once the Bobcats bought into the defensive philosophy of playing as a team, they eliminated easy scoring chances.

"They had to make (defence) a team thing and that made it hard for them to get easy baskets," he said.

Nicole Gracie led the 鈥機ats attack with 19 points.

91原创 Christian's Tabitha Meier led her team with nine points.

The Bobcats were 6-1 in league play, tied for top spot with Credo Christian.

91原创 Christian was third at 5-2 but they upset Credo in the semifinals.

In the other semifinal, Brookswood avenged their lone league loss, defeating the Walnut Grove Gators.

Credo defeated Walnut Grove 37-28 in the third-place game at districts and all four move on to the Fraser Valley championships.

Brookswood is seeded fifth in the 32-game tournament and hosts Panorama Ridge on Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 4:30 p.m.

Walnut Grove, seeded 21st, also plays at Brookswood on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against No. 12 Clayburn.

91原创 Christian is seeded 17th and Credo Christian is 19th. Both play their opening round games out of town.

Adrian says that for his team to be successful, they need to improve their practice efforts.

"When the whistle blows, they are ready to play and lay it on the line," he explained.

"The games bring the competitive fire out of the girls. They need that same energy at practice."
