Editor: I鈥檝e been approached by a number of friends about the federal NDP leadership race. We all know that this is a very important event, because the vote on March 24 will determine who the Leader of the Opposition is, and quite possibly the next prime minister as well.
I believe the NDP needs someone who is articulate, has parliamentary experience, has the respect of the Quebec caucus and who will work for an environmentally and economically sustainable social democracy. We need someone who can ensure access to universal health care and affordable social programs for those most in need. We need a revitalized economy that balances the environment, First Nations concerns, employment in all regions of the country and fair wages.
I believe can deliver on these challenges.
I first met Mulcair in 2006 in Quebec City, when he spoke to NDP convention delegates about sustainable development. Since then, I鈥檝e talked with him on several occasions and been impressed with his continued commitment to sustainability and a revitalized economy.
Mulcair has served in Quebec as a Member of the National Assembly and in cabinet as the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks. In Ottawa, he is an MP and has served in the House of Commons as finance critic, Co-Deputy Leader of the NDP and NDP House Leader.
There are few who have his political and legislative experience. It is clear to me that Tom Mulcair is the obvious choice.
