LETTER: New strategy needed to get bird flu under control

Culling countless numbers of farm animals won't stop wild bird populations from infecting domestic stock

Dear Editor,

Concerning bird flu – federal officials should disclose the precise thresholds of positive tests that triggers the killing of millions of animals.

If only a few cases are detected, isolation and containment could prevent millions of animal deaths and preserve our food supply.

Culling is a useless strategy.

The gain-of-function bird flu is spreading by migratory water fowl including mallard ducks. Every poultry flock and herd of cattle will get infected. You cannot stop it.

It would be best to develop an observational strategy and let the livestock develop herd immunity. Culling will prevent natural immunity, and will always more livestock susceptible to the next mallard duck landing on the farm.
