Bridges should not be tolled

Editor: It was reported that one economist at UBC said that all bridges and tunnels should be tolled. That is a ridiculous idea. It would create unnecessary hardships on those who have to use those crossings for work. Why would he suggest tolling on things that have been paid for years ago?Everyone in the province is responsible for the cost of infrastructure in B.C.  There are many bridges and ferries in the Interior,  which are not tolled, and which were not paid for through tolls levied on the people who live there. We have all paid for those bridges and ferries. There is no reason why motorists,  nor the home owners on both sides of a new bridge here, should be responsible for paying for these new bridges. It seems that all the government and TransLink can think about is tolling everything, and sticking the commuter for the cost. The infrastructure belongs to all the people of B.C. and the costs should be shared equitably by all B.C. taxpayers. We must not forget the cost of rebuilding the Sea to Ski Highway to Whistler, in time  for the Olympics. We all paid for that, it was not tolled. It鈥檚 great for the wealthy, and others who enjoy skiing. Those same people should contribute to the expenses of other bridges, even if they do not use them on a regular basis.I鈥檓 not an economist, but I can see that the debt is so staggering that politicians are probably very concerned how and when this debt is going to get paid. Obviously the idea of tolling the tunnel and all structures crossing the Fraser River,  west of Abbotsford has been seriously considered. There is a very simple answer. Spread the debt to include all people in B.C. who file income taxes. That is quite reasonable and fair.If there was a small increase in the income tax for everyone in B.C., that would eliminate tolls and perhaps the bureaucracy of TransLink at the same time.  The reason people are not using the Golden Ears Bridge is because the tolls are obviously too high.  Those who set the toll rates in TransLink must be in a much higher income bracket than most commuters.   It鈥檚 not popular to raise taxes, and those seeking re-election hesitate to do that. It鈥檚 time the bean counters got back to the table and calculated what percentage increase on personal income taxes would be required to pay for this massive debt in a reasonable time period.  If the present government is not prepared to change its policy on tolling, maybe the NDP may consider it as a good plank in their platform. It worked well for W.A.C. Bennett, who  removed all tolls when he was premier. It is my hope that this message may motivate many others to write to their representatives in Victoria to eliminate these tolls. Now is the time to speak up.E. Mason,91原创
