VIDEO: Sinkhole buckles 91Ô´´ City street

No reported injuries

A sinkhole buckled a street and sidewalk next to a construction site retaining wall in 91Ô´´ City Saturday morning on 201A street near Fraser Highway around 10 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

One construction worker, asked if anyone had been hurt, replied "only our feelings" and laughed.

The right-hand turning lane on 201A was closed off. Traffic on Fraser Highway was not affected.

It appeared the retaining wall was bulging inward next to the sinkhole.

91Ô´´ RCMP Cpl. Zynal Sharoom said motorists and pedestrians were being asked to avoid the area "to allow crews to conduct a proper assessment."

It happened after heavy rain soaked the area overnight.

Environment Canada had issued a rainfall warning in effect for Fraser Valley Central including Chilliwack, with precipitation expected to total 50mm.

"Rain, at times heavy, will continue today as a low pressure system tracks across southern BC," the weather agency said Saturday.

"A further 15 to 25 mm will fall before tapering to showers this afternoon."

Residents were warned "heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."
