Township of 91Ô´´ deputy fire chief Russ Jenkins said said the call came in as smoke at the reception desk.
"On further investigation it was [traced to] smoke up in the second floor. It looks like the smoke was due to a broken belt on a roof HVAC unit that was burning against the pulley" Jenkins told the 91Ô´´ Advance Times. "So the unit was isolated, and the building was vented."
Amory Wong, Fraser Health senior communications consultant, called it a "mechanical issue" at the 91Ô´´ Public Health unit. "No fire was present. When the smoke was discovered, all clients and staff evacuated the building, and all are safe and unharmed," Wong said.
All remaining appointments were moved to alternate public health units and the 91Ô´´ Public Health Unit reopened the next day at 8:30 a.m.
The building is the former headquarters of the Envision Credit Union, which has relocated to new premises.
