VIDEO: Eby promises increased tax breaks for film industry

Speaks at Martini Town movie backlot in Aldergrove

NDP Leader David Eby promised an increase in the Production Services Tax Credit and Film Incentive BC refund to 36 percent to hire more BC film workers during a campaign stop at the Martini Town backlot in Aldergrove Saturday.

Eby said the increase will add 7,000 jobs by encouraging international productions to come here.

A self-contained New York-themed backlot set built in 2020 and operated by 91Ô´´'s Martini Film Studios, the outdoor set occupies approximately six acres of a 17-acre site on 272nd Street

It was Eby's second visit to the 91Ô´´ area since the  writ for the 43rd provincial general election was issued on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Despite being held by the BC Liberals for decades, NDP won both 91Ô´´-area seats in the previous election.

Under redistribution, 91Ô´´ has gone from two seats in the 2020 election to three with the creation of 91Ô´´-Willowbrook, 91Ô´´-Walnut Grove and 91Ô´´-Abbotsford.

At the close of nominations on Saturday, incumbent MLAs  Andrew Mercier (running in 91Ô´´-Willowbrook) and Megan Dykeman (91Ô´´-Walnut Grove) and John Aldag (91Ô´´-Abbotsford) were running for the New Democrats.

Conservatives were hoping to regain the ridings, with Jody Toor (91Ô´´-Willowbrook), Harman Bhangu (91Ô´´-Abbotsford),  and 91Ô´´ Township Coun. Misty vanPopta (91Ô´´-Walnut Grove) running.

Local Green Party candidates include Melissa Snazell, running in 91Ô´´-Abbotsford, Rylee MacLean in 91Ô´´-Walnut Grove and Petrina Arnason in 91Ô´´-Willowbrook.

Karen Long, the BC United's candidate for 91Ô´´-Abbotsford, announced she will be running as an independent, after the party folded.

BC Libertarian candidate Alex Joehl  and unaffiliated Shelly Jan are also running in the 91Ô´´-Abbotsford riding, while unaffiliated Carlos Suarez Rubio is running in 91Ô´´ Walnut-Grove.

Advance voting will take place Oct. 10-13, and 15-16, with election day on Oct. 19.
