Two Mission residents fell victim to a Facebook scam last week.

A pair of locals lost money in Facebook scams last week, Mission RCMP say.

According to a news release, police received two reports of scams with the victim messaged by one of their Facebook friends.

The scammers asked the victims to send an e-transfer for a specific purpose and provided an e-mail. After sending the money, the victims discovered their friends鈥 accounts were hacked.

鈥淚f you receive a message from one of your Facebook friends asking for an e-transfer or for anything else that your friend wouldn鈥檛 normally ask you for, stop and verify the legitimacy of the message before taking any other action,鈥 Mission RCMP said.

鈥淓ither call and speak with your friend on the phone, or ask them a question that only your friend would actually know (such as where you first met 鈥 ensure it is not something the hacker could learn from your friend鈥檚 Facebook account).鈥

The detachment advises Mission residents to report any incidents of hacked accounts to Facebook.

鈥淎nyone who has lost money through a Facebook scam should also call their local police,鈥 RCMP said.
