Investigators have now confirmed that the remains of two individuals were found inside a torched vehicle Friday (Jan. 3) at Sumas Mountain Regional Park in Abbotsford.
A press release was issued Wednesday (Jan. 8) by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) with the update, but no further details were provided.
鈥淎lthough the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still being examined, we do not believe this was a random incident, and therefore, there is no ongoing risk to the public,鈥 said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
Police previously stated that a vehicle fire in the park was reported at around 2:45 p.m. Friday.
When officers arrived, they found that a red 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander had been set on fire along a forest service road.
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service put out the blaze, and human remains were found inside the burned vehicle, police said.
Fong said IHIT is continuing to work with Abbotsford Police, the Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service on the investigation.
