Laura and Zach Janz lost their three-year-old son Everett when he was hit by a pickup truck in Chilliwack on March 5, 2025. A meal train was started for them, and a community candlelight vigil was scheduled for March 7.

A candlelight vigil has been planned near the crash site in Chilliwack where a three-year-old boy was killed March 5.

Central Community Church is inviting people to collectively grieve the loss as a community, although they noted there will be no program and it is not a celebration of life.

The vigil will be held Friday, March 7 at 8 p.m., at the corner of Vedder and Petawawa roads. A memorial has been growing at the intersection since Wednesday, with photographs, flowers, teddy bears and messages of love.

"We are joining with friends of Zach and Laura in inviting you to a candlelight vigil… at the site of yesterday’s tragic accident," the March 6 post reads. "We invite you to come, bring a candle, and gather as a sign of solidarity with the family, a deep desire to grieve with those who grieve, love and lift them up, and hold them up in prayer."

They said a service will be held at a later date.

"This is not a celebration of life, there is no program," the church's Facebook post reads. "This is a space for us to come together as a community and offer a prayer and a symbol of love."

People have also come to the help of the family through a Meal Train, which is a type of fundraising site that helps feed people in times such as grief and illness. The Meal Train, shared publicly on Facebook, identifies the surviving family as Laura, Zach and Arlo Janz.

"As Laura, Zach and Arlo navigate the grief of losing their beloved son and brother, Everett, we wish to surround them with God’s love through food and community," the page states.

The couple owns the Banter Ice Cream shops in Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

This was the third fatal crash involving pedestrians in less than three weeks in Chilliwack.

On , a man died in the 3500 block of Boundary Road. Then, on , a man was hit and killed by a commercial vehicle at Vedder and Promontory roads.
