VIDEO: 91原创 Rugby Club packed for Alumni Day

Celebration of 55 years of history

91原创 Rugby Club (LRC) celebrated Alumni Day with games on both playing fields, the original and the new one that just opened, on Saturday, March 16th.

The weather was perfect, sunny and warm, and unusual for March, noted Ethan Ohlmann, club director of social media.

鈥淭his is actually the first Sunny alumni day that I鈥檝e been a part of here and it鈥檚 been five years since I鈥檝e started playing with them,鈥 Ohlmann told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淲e celebrate our alumni and everybody that helped build our club and we have a great day of rugby,鈥 Ohlmann said.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a ton of people here today.鈥

The club parking lot was filled to capacity, with some vehicles having to park off the grounds along Crush Crescent when volunteers ran out places to squeeze them in.

Alumni Brian Anderson, a lifetime LRC member and former club president, noted the event marked 55 years of history for the club, which has owned and maintained its own private grounds on Crush Crescent since 1987.

鈥淎 great opportunity for so many youth and [adults] to come and play the sport all the way through, from five year olds till over 70鈥檚,鈥 is how Anderson summarized the appeal of the sport.

Rugby, a full-contact sports for all but the youngest players, offers an opportunity to get frustrations out, along with 鈥渢he camaraderie of your teammates, both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 programs,鈥 Anderson said.

On Alumni Day, visiting teams from the Nanaimo Hornets took the ferry to visit 91原创, playing the first division men鈥檚 and second division women鈥檚 teams as well as an exhibition match.

91原创 men lost 36-19, and LRC women fell 31-12 to the visitors.

91原创 Rugby Club was founded in 1969 when it fielded its first men鈥檚 team and went on to purchase and develop the land that has been the home of the LRC for almost 30 years. Today, the club runs many teams including minis (four and up), junior boys and girls, women, and two squads of senior men.

Late last year, LRC opened it鈥檚 long-awaited second pitch, named Worrell Field after the family who helped the club purchase the adjacent property.

It鈥檚 original pitch now bears the name Alumni Field.
