91原创's champion rider Tiffany Foster aboard Battlecry set a quick standard of 31.40 seconds at the ATCO Cup grand prix at Thunderbird Show Park on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Her time held until the final pair of competitors entered the ring, where James Chawke and Daido van't Ruytershof Z shaved nearly a second off to stop the clock at 30.69 seconds and claimed their second grand prix title in as many weeks at tbird.
In a King Edward-esque tack modification, the pair were absent a brow band from their bridle in the CSI3* ATCO Cup. Chawke said it was game day experiment for the developing partnership.
鈥淪he鈥檚 not liking something,鈥 he explained. 鈥淪he didn鈥檛 like the bonnet, so we took that off, and we鈥檙e just playing around with things to see what she likes the most.鈥
The results suggests she likes to win 鈥 almost as much as Chawke.
鈥淚 thought if I did roughly the same steps as [Tiffany], I should be close,鈥 said Chawke. 鈥淢y horse is very quick across the ground and probably has a smaller stride.鈥
Foster and Battlecry were relegated to second. USA鈥檚 Kyle King and SIG Chiari finished third in 31.44, just four hundredths of a second behind.
鈥淪he was incredible,鈥 continued Chawke. 鈥淪he鈥檚 been so good, very consistent. She tries so hard.鈥
It鈥檚 a partnership that has come together quickly. Chawke picked up the ride on the 10-year-old Zangersheide mare in the spring.
In 15 FEI starts, they鈥檝e jumped to five podium finishes, including their back-to-back grand prix wins at tbird this month. But ask Chawke what the secret to their early success has been and he鈥檒l simply say 鈥渟he鈥檚 just very good.鈥
鈥淪he鈥檚 a lot of quality. She鈥檚 very quick. She wants to do the right thing. So I mean, that鈥檚 why 鈥 she鈥檚 a very good animal.鈥
Also good is Chawke鈥檚 consistency. The Irishman has finished on the podium in every international class he entered at this week鈥檚 Summer Fort Classic.
In addition to the grand prix, he was second in the CSI three-star George & Dianne Tidball Legacy Welcome and won the CSI three-star The Keg Qualifier with Nacara Van Berkenbroeck Z.
