When 91ԭ RAMS football player Derek Best saw his name on the draft list, he called his mom to share the exciting news.
He kept refreshing his phone for the update, which came announcing he was drafted for the Edmonton Elks to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The 23-year-old athlete’s dream had come true.
“I was in shock,” Best said.
Best has played football since the age of six, encouraged by his dad.
“It’s always been my goal since I was young.”
Before the pandemic, Best played on Western University’s team for two years right out of high school. He moved back home when the COVID pandemic hit and joined the RAMS, which he’s played for since.
Best left for Edmonton on Monday, May 8, still not knowing if he made the team and what position he would play if he did.
The pre-season starts Monday, May 22 with the Edmonton Elks facing off against the Calgary Stampeders.
