Shooting Eagles remain undefeated and Black Fish pushed their winning streak to four games in week sevn action of the Arena Lacrosse League West Division in 91原创.
Black Fish were 15-11 winners over the Sea Spray while the Shooting Eagles edged the Grizzlies 11-10, with both games played Saturday, Jan. 11 at 91原创 Events Centre.
Black Fish 15 Sea Spray 11
Trailing by a pair just 3:22 into Saturday鈥檚 contest, coach Rod Jensen鈥檚 Black Fish squad scored eight unanswered goals in 10 minutes to defeat the Sea Spray.
鈥淲e were fully in sync. Probably our fullest lineup we have had: four good righties and four good lefties 鈥 puts their defence in a bit of a difficult situation,鈥 Jensen said.
It was a fourth straight win for the Black Fish following the team鈥檚 0-3 start to the Arena Lacrosse League West Division season.
Ethan M鈥橪ot scored four goals for the third straight game and earned first star honours for the second consecutive week following his five-point game. He leads the Black Fish with 14 goals and is tied for the team lead with 26 points. Prior to Saturday鈥檚 game, M鈥橪ot asked Jensen what we needed to do to earn himself some more power-play time 鈥 only two of his goals have come with the man advantage 鈥 and the coach said his answer was to score more goals.
鈥淗e answered the bell today,鈥 Jensen said.
Brian Gillis (3-2), Rhys Porteous (2-4) and Connor Watson (2-1) also chipped in with multi-goal games while Kordell Primus (1-1), Aidan Murphy (1-1), Drew Andre and Temeke7 Gottfriedsen chipping in a goal apiece.
Brandon Humphrey delivered a 34-save performance on 42 shots before giving way to Darian Claxton for mop-up duty as the back-up finished with a pair of saves in 6:32 of action. Since-rejoining the team two games ago, Humphrey sports an .817 save percentage, which if eligible, would be tops among all ALL West goalies.
Humphrey did not like his start on Saturday after giving up a pair of early goals.
鈥淚 think I was a little off early,鈥 he admitted.
Following the 2-0 goal, Humphrey and the Black Fish were able to keep the ball out of their net for the next 21:45.
鈥淗aving that lead, we were able to just keep the pedal down,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have to do too much, just play my game.鈥
The Sea Spray鈥檚 Thomas Semple and James Rahe each had four goals and seven points with Trevayne Hunter (1-3), Kai George (1-1) and Seamus Bankier (1-1) adding the other offence.
Both goalies saw action for the Sea Spray as Lee Jackman made 11 saves on 18 shots and Marc Rippberger stopping 35 of 43 shots.
Shooting Eagles 11 Grizzlies 10
While his Shooting Eagles teammates strategized in the locker room and readied for the second half, Garret Winter remained on the floor, taking as many shots as he could.
Winter 鈥 who leads ALL West Division with 20 assists and is tied for fourth with 31 points 鈥 had been held to a single assist in the first half of Saturday鈥檚 game at 91原创 Events Centre against the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies held a slim 6-5 lead through the first 30 minutes against the first place (and unbeaten) Shooting Eagles and Winter was attempting to break in a new stick as his usual one had broken in the first half.
鈥淚t was a little bit hard to get used to, so I wasn鈥檛 totally comfortable, but the team was lifting me up the whole game,鈥 Winter explained.
And the practice paid off as Winter scored with 3:43 to play, snapping the tie game as the Eagles improved to 7-0 with an 11-10 victory.
鈥淐aptain came down, drew a slide, gave me a good pass and the rest is history,鈥 Winter said of the decisive goal, which was set up by captain Coady Adamson.
The Grizzlies 鈥 who have lost six in a row and sit with a 1-6 record 鈥 led for nearly the entire first half before the Shooting Eagles offence finally found its stride in the third, striking for four goals in a span of 3:08 to take their first lead at 9-6. Undeterred, the Grizzlies battled back to pull even early in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for Winter鈥檚 heroics.
鈥淚 felt the whole game, we were playing well; we were getting chances. We knew if we stayed consistent, our time was going to come,鈥 Winter said, also crediting Grizzlies goaltender Christian Del Bianco, who finished with 55 saves as his team was outshot 66-53.
Along with their stellar goaltending 鈥 Del Bianco had an .833 save percentage 鈥 the Grizzlies made the Shooting Eagles pay for their penalty troubles as they struck six times with the man advantage. They also added a short-handed goal and two in transition, meaning the Eagles allowed just one goal during set five-on-five play.
Shooting Eagles coach Adam Smith said that is the message to his team.
鈥淲e have to stay out of the box. If we are not in the penalty box and holding teams to one goal five-on-five, it is a heck of a lot easier to play lacrosse. You can鈥檛 keep taking penalties and thinking you are going to keep winning games,鈥 he said.
Winter 鈥 who was the third star with a goal and three assists 鈥 had his four points matched by first star Dylan McIntosh, who scored four times in the victory. Mark Yingling (2-1) and Jake Young both scored twice with Dylan Lacroix and Keegan Kozack finishing with a goal and an assist apiece. Doug Porter and Declan Fitzpatrick finished with three and two helpers, respectively.
Goaltender Brody Harris made 43 saves.
Dennon Armstrong was the second star for the Grizzlies following his three goals and five games, with Kyle Brunsch also registering a hat trick. Nash Moog scored twice with Pearson Willis (1-2) and Noah Buchan rounding out the scoring.
Next, week 8 at 91原创 Events Centre on Jan. 18 with the Grizzlies (1-6) facing the Sea Spray (2-5) at 1 p.m. before the Black Fish (4-3) and Shooting Eagles (7-0) put their winning streaks on the line at 4 p.m.
