HOOPS: Day 2 of Tsumura girls invitationals underway

B.C. basketball tournament started Wednesday and wraps Saturday at 91Ô­´´ Events Centre

The quarter-final round is set, following Day 1 of the 2024 Tsumura Basketball Invitational (TBI) Girls Tournament on Wednesday at 91Ô­´´ Events Centre.

Sixty-four teams – split into a pair of 16-team brackets – tipped off mid-week, setting up the quarter-final round on Day 2 on Thursday.

Select 16
The Select 16 bracket sees the Notre Dame Jugglers (Vancouver) face the South Kamloops Titans after the Jugglers won 40-37 over the Maple Ridge Ramblers and the Titans took down Chilliwack’s Unity Christian Flames 55-34.

The other quarter-final, on the bottom half of the draw, features Vancouver’s Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs against the Mark R. Isfeld Ice (Courtenay).

The Bulldogs defeated Victoria’s Pacific Christian Pacers 48-38, while the Ice won 66-39 over the Heritage Woods Kodiaks.

On the top half of the draw, the Walnut Grove Gators (91Ô­´´) rallied to defeat the Pitt Meadows Marauders 57-54 and now face the Duchess Park Condors (Prince George), who were 72-51 winners over the Johnston Heights Eagles (Surrey).

The last quarter-final has the South Delta Sun Devils against the Vernon Panthers. The Sun Devils were 84-58 winners over the Centennial Centaurs (Coquitlam) while Vernon won 67-58 over the Britannia Bruins (Vancouver).

The quarter-final round got underway at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 12) will all four games on centre court.

Super 16
In the Super 16 bracket, the quarter-final games will be played on south court beginning at 3 p.m.

The first match sees Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers against North Vancouver’s Argyle Pipers. The Panthers defeated the 91Ô­´´ Christian Lightning (91Ô­´´) 83-54, while the Pipers edged Victoria’s Claremont Spartans 57-52.

The Riverside Rapids (Port Coquitlam) face Chilliwack’s G.W. Graham Grizzlies. The Rapids were runaway winners, 85-29 over Surrey’s Semiahmoo Thunderbirds and the Grizzlies won 89-71 against Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights.

The Kelowna Owls will face the Brookswood Bobcats (91Ô­´´) after the ‘Cats won 72-49 over the Charles Best Blue Devils (Coquitlam), while the Owls edged Victoria’s St. Michaels University School Blue Jags 57-56.

And the last of the four quarter-final matches sees last year’s TBI and provincial champion Seaquam Seahawks (North Delta) against Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders.

In Wednesday play, the Seahawks defeated Kamloops’ Sa-Hali Sabres 75-29, while Holy Cross won 60-48 over Kelowna’s Okanagan Mission Huskies.
