Stalew Arts & Cultural Society marked its 10th anniversary with a all-day celebration of Indigenous culture at historic Fort 91原创 on Saturday, June 15 that included powwow drumming, singing, and dancing as well as an Indigenous vendor鈥檚 market.
Phyllis Atkins from Kwantlen First Nation, manager of arts, culture and language for the Indigenous women-led registered charity, said the event marked 10 years of "empowering, uplifting and supporting Indigenous artists to share their gifts."
It was timed for the week leading up to National Indigenous People鈥檚 Day on Friday, June 21, which acknowledges the history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and M茅tis across Canada.
"That's what Stalew is all about, is reclaiming our language and our culture, revitalizing Indigenous spaces and Indigenous gatherings, such as the Stalew powwow, which we're going to have this September 13th, 14th, 15th at the 91原创 Events Centre," Atkins told the 91原创 Advance Times.
On Saturday, June 22, the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society will mark National Indigenous People鈥檚 Day with a cultural heritage event at Douglas Park Spirit Square in 91原创 City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a barbecue, and bannock, craft market vendors, community partners, a youth and kids zone, and stage entertainment.
