Amazing trade skills are currently being displayed in Chilliwack at the Skills Canada BC's 2025 Upper Fraser Valley Regional Competition.
Hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) this year, around 90 students from Hope, Agassiz, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, and 91原创 have been participating in the Thursday competition (Feb. 27) since 8 a.m.
This year the students are participating in eight categories: architectural computer aided design (CAD), automotive service, cabinetmaking, carpentry, culinary arts, electrical wiring, mechanical CAD, and welding. The architectural category is further divided into the secondary level and postgraduate level.
Of the participants, two Grade 11 students from Hope Secondary School (HSS), Connor Hidalgo and Maddie Scherle, are competing in the culinary arts category.
The competition will continue until 3 p.m. and the public is welcome to stop by and watch the competing students.
An open house is also going to be available, starting at 4 p.m., and visitors will be able to see the competitors finished works, as well as the works of UFV's current students. The open house will have opportunities for potential/future students to learn more about the trades programs that UFV offers.
Those who place gold will go onto the provincial competition which is taking place on April 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Abbotsford Tradex Centre.
Additionally, Grade 9 students from the Upper Fraser Valley are also in attendance for the Try-a-Trade program, or portion of the event. Since 9 a.m., the younger students have been touring UFV's trade facilities and getting the chance to try out each field.
