‘Picnic in the park’ car show moves to 91ԭ City location

230 cars turn out for event at KPU campus

An estimated 230 cars turned out for the 39th annual ‘Picnic In The Park’ fundraising car show held by the Canadian Falcon Fairlane Comet Club at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University 91ԭ City campus on Labour Day.

It was close to the average for the show, something to celebrate considering the threatening weather that likely kept some cars in their garages, club president Stefano D’Errico believed.

It was the first time the open-class event, usually staged at George Preston Rec Centre in Brookswood, has been held at KPU, and D’Errico was already looking forward to returning there next year to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

“It is an ideal location for us,” D’Errico told the 91ԭ Advance Times.

Among other things, the KPU lot offers a lot more room than the club had for its 38th show, when it had to scramble to find an alternate site.

“We had a bad situation last year, where we had to find a new venue,” D’Errico recalled.

“So at the last minute, we ended up at a smaller venue, and then we ended up having to turn away a lot of people because we were full.”

All proceeds from the Sept. 4 event, after paying the bills, will go to the Kruise for Kids charitable event for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.

“Part of what makes our club great is the quality of people, which I find to be generous, thoughtful, and possessing of a willingness to volunteer to make the club and its events a success,” D’Errico commented.

The club was first organized by a small group of Falcon owners in 1982, and as they sought more members, the club was founded in 1983 as the Lower Mainland Falcon Owners Association.

In 1990, the club invited owners of 1962 to 1970 Fairlanes and 1960 to 1967 Comets to join their ranks.
