A man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a series of robberies in Surrey, Abbotsford and 91原创.
Jaden Kahnapace-Newton has been convicted in three robberies that occurred in October 2021 and has received a sentence of two years, one month and 24 days in jail, less credit for time served.
Kahnapace-Newton was first linked to the crime on Oct. 2, 2021, when Surrey RCMP responded to a retail store robbery, at a cellphone store in the 16000-block of 24 Avenue. According to police, an employee was assaulted during the robbery, with $1,500 cash stolen in addition to 38 cellphones.
The second robbery was also at a cellphone store, just over a week after the first, this time in the 20100-block of 88 Avenue in 91原创. Two suspects entered the store, assaulted and threatened the employee, according to a press release from Surrey RCMP. Twenty cellphones were stolen.
The third robbery was one day later at a pharmacy on Townline Road in Abbotsford, where three suspects were reported to have entered and indicated they had a gun. A "large quantity" of medication was stolen, and police say Kahnapace-Newton was identified by police through surveillance footage.
A search warrant for Kahnapace-Newton was issued in November that year and carried out at his home in Calgary, Alta. where he was arrested for the three robberies.
"Medication stolen during the pharmacy robbery, along with cellphones stolen during the retail store robberies were located inside his residence," reads the press release issued by Surrey RCMP.
Kahnapace-Newton pleaded guilty in court and was convicted on Aug. 8 of three counts of robbery, three counts of forcible confinement and one count of breach of release order, according to Surrey RCMP. Kahnapace-Newton has been sentenced to two years, one month and 24 days, less credit for time served.
He is also prohibited from owning any firearms for the remainder of his life.
"The investigation crossed provincial and municipal boundaries, leading to a very successful outcome due to the great work of all the agencies involved," police state, crediting the support of 91原创 RCMP, Abbotsford Police, Calgary Police Service and the Lower Mainland Integrated Forensic Identification Section.
