A man living in a tent in the Fraser River Heritage Park area flashed a knife at students out for a class walk last week.

A man living in a tent in the Fraser River Heritage Park area allegedly flashed a knife at a middle school class out for a walk on Thursday (Feb. 27).

According to a Mission RCMP news release, a grade seven class from 脡cole Heritage Park Middle School was on a class walk through the nature trails when there was an incident between students and a man living in a tent in the area.

Police say one of the students tossed a rock at the tent and the man emerged with a knife.

He then made 鈥渄isparaging鈥 comments to the students, according to an email to the school community from 脡cole Heritage Park Middle School principal Marcello Gabriele.

Students told the supervising adult about the incident and it was later reported to Mission RCMP.

The detachment said no one was injured.

鈥淭here is no indication that the man directly threatened any students or made any attempt to hurt them, although it was clearly a frightening situation for those who were involved,鈥 Mission RCMP said.

The owner of the tent relocated but police said it has yet to be confirmed whether the owner of the tent is the same man who displayed the knife.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing, police said.

鈥淎ny incident which results in a concern for a person's safety in Heritage Park should be immediately reported to police,鈥 RCMP said.

Gabriele said in the e-mail that the school won鈥檛 permit classes to use the forest area until further notice.

鈥淲e will also increase supervision in the area. We can assure you we are taking this matter seriously and will continue to investigate,鈥 Gabriele wrote.
